What Is Cigar Smoking Etiquette?

Smoking cigars might be a good source of pleasure in your life, but the polite smoker is aware that not everyone loves the taste (or odor!) of a good Cuban. savoring a good stogie without hurting others can’t be emphasized enough while the fervor of anti-smoking campaigns is still in full swing. Remember that it can be difficult to estimate the smell that others feel while you’re smoking a cigar. Do not forget that any surface cigar smoke touches, such as clothing, articles of furniture, and walls, can possibly leave a strong residue. Learn to become a carefully thoughtful and courteous cigar smoker, so that you can enjoy your stogie without a heavy conscience.
If you live with non-smokers, try to find a ventilated area in your home where you can smoke your cigars comfortably. Although you may be tempted to smoke in your bedroom or office, it’s generally not a good idea to smoke in an enclosed area without some sort of ventilation such as a window. Go outside to smoke, if possible, so that you never inhale the toxic air that is present when smoking in an enclosed area. Relax on the porch, pull up a lawn chair, or go to any other open area where you can smoke comfortably without endangering non-smokers, such as children and the elderly. Remember that cigar smoke contains many carcinogens that can be easily inhaled by non-smokers.
Remember that the courteous and polite smoker will only light up where legally permitted when smoking a cigar outside of their home. Do no light up in a bar, hotel, or restaurant where smoking is clearly prohibited. The courteous cigar smoker will also make sure to smoke in the company of other smokers so if you are with someone who does not smoke, ask his or her permission. Make sure that the smoke isn’t wafting in their direction if they happen to agree. Make sure that if you’re sitting near an open window or air conditioner that the smoke isn’t moving in their direction. Also, make sure no one around you is eating because the secondhand smoke from a discourteous smoker is a surefire way to ruin a meal.
Make sure to dispose of your ashes in the appropriate container when you are smoking outside of your home. Don’t forget that ashes can easily blow away, especially in lower quality cigars so don’t litter with ashes, and be careful they don’t blow near anyone around you.
